Bunion and Running together- Possible?

What brings the athlete on the field, his powerful feet, and chronic issues and pain with your feet are the last things that you want. It really becomes impossible to proceed further in the career if the problem persists. If you take yourself lightly, the problem can become serious.

You must be wondering, after bunions, can an athlete run? Running slows down at a greater level pain in the ankle and foot. Does this mean they need to take a new career? No, but only if you can add preventive measures to your lifestyle and continue taking podiatry care.

Bunion

A bunion is a foot condition where deformity happens in the foot base, particularly in the big toe joint. It often inherited from your parents or grandparents.  Initially, bunions appear odd or can cause significant pain inside the shoes. With the passing of time, the bone grows more deformed and worsens the situation and can cause other compensation issues.

Role of bunions in the life of runner/athlete

Athletes may tend to ignore bunions at the beginning under the impression that it is nothing, but get worried when the corns and blisters become a regular affair. You may think it to be a small thing, but they often face issues where the soft bones of their ankle and feet start hurting.

With the growing phase of the bunion, the toe can be affected completely. With the advanced stage of advanced bunion, they have to be ready to face serious foot problems, including:

  • Tendonitis occurs in the tissue connecting the toe muscles with the. It leads to an inflammation and compensation.

  • The top toe joint starts bending near the toenails and hammertoes can occur

  • Hammertoes are conditions where the affected toe of the middle joint starts bending outwards.

  • The bend of the pinky toe is called tailor's bunion or bunionette.

Reasons why runners experience bunions

The reason for having the bunion can be genetic or wrong lifestyle. People who put excessive regular pressure on the toes and keep their feet on the repetitive motion are more likely to get it.

People who wear high heels regularly for a long period or remain standing throughout the day are likely to get it more. Women get more affected by it due to the hormonal changes that turn their joints loose as well as wearing tighter shoes.

While talking about the runners, they often had it due to the repeated process of pavement hitting. They have to wear tight shoes/high heels and flat feet, attracting the issue more.

Ways to Control bunions among runners

People with genetic issues or with loose joints are likely to have it more. Runners may have more of this and can control it by selecting the right shoes.

Choose shoes with low drop or those zero drop ones. A shoe drop can be defined as the difference in height between the heel and the toe when standing wearing a shoe. Like for a 4-inch heel, you get a drop of 4 inches. High drops mean extra pressure on the metatarsal joint and sometimes even reduce the ligaments around the Achilles tendon.
